Misnover

They speak of the art of war,

but the arts
draw their light from the soul's well,
and warfare
dries up the soul and draws its power
from a dark and burning wasteland.
When Leonardo
set his genius to devising
machines of destruction he was not
acting in the service of art,
he was suspending
the life of art
over and abyss,
as if one were to hold
a living child out of an airplane window
at thirty thousand feet.

La vigilia

Cuando los ratones se despiertan
y salen a hacer su trabajo de buscar
la vida, las migas de la vida,
yo me siento en silencio en el cuarto de atrás
intentando calmar mi mente de su parloteo,
rumores y sucesos, y encontrar
vida, migas de vida, para nutrirla
hasta que, replegado en la quietud,
desde el santuario del desorden
el dios animal        habla         Ay,
pobres ratones— No dejé
nada para ellos, ni pan,
ni grasa, ni un plato sin lavar.
Vayan por las paredes a otras cocinas;
acá hagamos silencio.
Voy a sentarme en vela
a esperar al Gato
que con lengua humana
profiere oráculos inhumanos
o con sus garras, abre delicadamente
las cajas chinas, cada una de las cuales
contiene el Mundo y su sombra.

The Vigil

When mice awaken
and come out to their work of searching
for life, crumbs of life,
I sit quiet in my back room
trying to quiet my mind of its chattering,
rumors and events, and find/
life, crumbs of life, to nourish it
until in stillness, replenished,
the animal god within the
cluttered shrine speaks. Alas!
poor mice – I have left
nothing for them, no bread,
no fat, not an unwashed plate.
Go through the walls to other kitchens;
let it be silent here.
I’ll sit in vigil
awaiting the Cat
who with human tongue
speaks inhuman oracles
or delicately, with its claws, opens
Chinese boxes, each containing
the World and its shadow.

El Crecimiento de un poeta

VI

Hacer poemas es encontrar
una silla vieja en una zanja,
y traerla a casa
a la cueva del desván;
un caballo extraviado del corral,
un barco a la deriva en las malezas de la orilla,
fosforescente.

Luego en la mecedora rota
escaparse —a la realidad—.
Al reino de ambrosía y mendrugos
no se llega con esfuerzo y ahínco.

Recién cuando los pies comienzan
a danzar, cuando la silla
cruje y galopa,
se abren las puertas
y uno
se descubre
adentro
del reino sin rey.

The grow of a poet

VI

To make poems is to find
an old chair in the gutter
and bring it home
into the upstairs cave;
a stray horse from the pond,
a stray boat on the weedy shore,
phosphorescent.

Then in the broken rocking chair
take off —to reality!
Realm of ambrosia and hard crusts
earnest trudging doesn't lead to.

Only when feet begin
to dance, when the chair
creaks and gallops,
do the gates open
and we
discover ourselves
inside
the kingless kingdom.

El Hilo

Algo tira de mí muy suave,
invisible, silenciosamente,
un hilo - o una red
más delgada que una telaraña
pero así de elástica.
Nunca probé qué tan fuerte es.
Ningún anzuelo
me punzó y desgarró ¿Fue
hace poco que este hilo
empezó a tironearme?¿O
hará siglos? ¿Habré
nacido con el nudo en el cuello
como una brida? No es miedo
sino una ráfaga de asombro
lo que me hace
contener el aire al sentir
el tirón cuando ya lo creía yo
desatado y perdido.

The Thread

Something is very gently,
invisibly, silently,
pulling at me-a thread
or net of threads
finer than cobweb and as
elastic. I haven't tried
the strength of it. No barbed hook
pierced and tore me. Was it
not long ago this thread
began to draw me? Or
way back? Was I
born with its knot about my
neck, a bridle? Not fear
but a stirring
of wonder makes me
catch my breath when I feel
the tug of it when I thought
it had loosened itself and gone.
